A Life-Changing Doctor
Dr. Peter Rowe at Johns Hopkins has been my doctor for over 10 years, and during that time, he’s made an immeasurable impact on my life. Our relationship is truly unique, and I’m incredibly grateful for his care and guidance over the years. Despite my age and limited medical knowledge, Dr. Rowe has always deeply valued my opinion, and his approach to my care has shaped the way I view healthcare and advocacy.
A Doctor Who Values My Opinion
When I was just a junior in high school, Dr. Rowe gave me the incredible opportunity to co-author a research article in the Journal of Peds. This opportunity may seem unusual for someone so young, but it shows the level of respect he has for me, even though I was still learning about the medical field. He often jokes about how he wishes I had pursued a career in medicine, so I could eventually replace him when he retires!
A Doctor Who Sees Beyond the Diagnosis
Dr. Rowe is known for his humor, often lightening the mood with “dad jokes” during difficult appointments. While my diagnoses have been frustrating and complicated at times, Dr. Rowe has never given up on me. He constantly seeks new insights, consulting with colleagues and even reviewing patient cases from years ago that might be similar to mine. His intellectual curiosity goes beyond treating straightforward cases—he actively seeks out challenges because he truly wants to help people.
Mutual Respect and Trust in My Voice
One of the most remarkable aspects of Dr. Rowe’s care is how he never talks down to me. He treats me as an equal, always curious about my thoughts and input. Even when I was just a high school junior sitting in on clinic days, he would ask for my opinions. This willingness to listen and learn from his patients is what makes Dr. Rowe stand out. He values the voices of those he cares for and openly admits that he learns a lot from his patients as well.
Gratitude for a Decade of Care
Dr. Rowe, thank you for the past 10 years of care, support, and learning. Working on a research paper with you and attending clinical appointments as a teenager is something I’ll never forget. While you may have wanted me to enter the medical field, know that the expertise and lessons I’ve learned from you will be carried forward in my films, which aim to spread awareness for chronic illness and disability.
