Abby has been navigating life with a chronic illness for years, learning how to redefine what it means to truly live—especially during the summer months. Redefining What “Fully Living” Means to Me
While my version of summer might look different than someone else’s, fully living to me means getting out of bed, making the most of every day, and creating joy in the small things. Nothing is too small to celebrate—every accomplishment is still an accomplishment.
Accessibility tools have helped me reclaim parts of summer I used to miss. Products like waterproof shower covers allow me to enjoy being near water, even with a central line. While fully submerging isn’t advised, Care+Wear products make it possible to be by the pool or beach without the constant fear of my line getting wet. For me, that’s a big deal—being able to sit by the ocean, feel the breeze, and simply be near the water makes summer feel whole again.
When Summer Fun Isn’t Always Outside
Managing symptoms during the summer is a different kind of challenge. For many people with chronic illness, the heat alone can be a major trigger. That means summer doesn’t always include being outside every day—or sometimes at all. And that’s okay.
You can still enjoy the season without compromising your body. There are so many ways to make the most of summer indoors—watching a favorite movie, doing summery crafts with friends, or even just relaxing in the AC. It’s all about finding what works for you and creating your own version of seasonal joy.
Saying No Is Sometimes the Hardest—and Healthiest—Choice
Sometimes the hardest part of summer is having to turn down events or activities because of my health. It’s never easy to miss out on parties or outings, but going out in extreme heat just isn’t realistic for me. And as difficult as that decision can be, I’ve learned that choosing my health comes first.
Saying no to protect your body is an act of self-love. It helps with symptom control and leads to better days ahead. And trust me—there are always other ways to connect and create memories without putting your health at risk.
Release the Pressure: This Is Your Summer
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned? Let go of the pressure. You don’t need to do what everyone else is doing. You don’t need to explain your decisions. And you definitely don’t need to push your body past its limits just because it’s “summer.”
Take precautions for the activities you do want to do, and adapt the rest. For me, going to the movies is a perfect summer outing—it’s cool, dark, and I get to spend time with my favorite people. Arts and crafts are another favorite. There are so many summer-themed DIYs that still let me celebrate the season, even from indoors.
This might not be the summer of traveling or beach hopping for me—but it’s still a summer filled with joy, creativity, and comfort. Because I’ve made it the summer of me.
