Finding Comfort During a Difficult Time

When I was 17, I went through one of the most challenging experiences of my life: my first finger amputation. It was a time filled with fear, vulnerability, and uncertainty. I was just a teenager, struggling to cope with the idea of transitioning into an adult hospital and all the changes that came with it. That’s when I met a nurse who would forever impact my life. Her care went beyond her job description—she brought compassion, empathy, and joy during a time I needed it most.

Creating a Safe Space for Self-Care

One of the most memorable moments with her was a “girls' night” she hosted just for me. She brought face masks, set up a romantic comedy, and even invited a few other nurses to join us. We laughed, relaxed, and shared in a much-needed self-care moment right in my hospital room. She wasn’t just a nurse that night; she became a friend. Her presence made me feel safe, supported, and seen. That sense of comfort helped me build trust in her, which was a rare gift at a time when I was scared and unsure.

Small Acts with a Big Impact

There were countless small gestures she did that made a world of difference. Whenever my mom left to talk with doctors, this nurse stayed by my side, never leaving me to feel alone. She truly understood the importance of emotional support, even bringing pizza to our girls' night to make it feel like home. It may seem like a small thing to someone else, but to me, it was everything.

Words of Faith and Encouragement

In addition to her actions, her words stayed with me. She reminded me to have faith, saying, “Trust in God’s plans.” Those words brought me peace when I felt like I had nothing left to give. She reassured me, telling me that although things might feel tough, I had my family, friends, and faith to lean on. Her words gave me hope during a time I felt empty and overwhelmed.

A Lasting Impact: A Message of Gratitude

To all healthcare workers who show kindness, patience, and compassion to young patients like my 17-year-old self—thank you. I’m now 28, and more than a decade later, I still remember these incredible gestures. These were small acts of kindness that may have felt routine to you, but they left a lasting impact on me.

To my nurse, thank you for going above and beyond. I will never take those moments for granted.
