"Pink is Just a Color": Empowering the Breast Cancer Community

  • 2 min read

Meet Brittany Kelley

Brittany is a breast cancer warrior whose diagnosis with cancer has not only been a personal battle but also a source of resilience and hope for her community. In the face of adversity, Brittany rose above her challenges to inspire and make a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Battling Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

At the age of 35, Brittany received a life-altering diagnosis of stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer on June 20, 2023.  With no prior medical history, she embarked on a difficult path, undergoing 24 weeks of chemotherapy before facing a double mastectomy. Throughout her journey, Brittany displayed unwavering strength and resilience, facing each chemotherapy treatment with courage and determination.

"Pink is Just a Color" Breast Cancer Walk

Amidst her own struggles, Brittany noticed a void in her community's support system for breast cancer patients. In August 2023, she decided to fill this gap by organizing the first "Pink is Just a Color” breast cancer 5K and 1.5-mile run/walk –  a heartfelt initiative to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer patients in Carteret County, North Carolina.

The response was overwhelming, with 500 participants joining Brittany in the walk and an impressive $42,000 raised. But for Brittany, the success of the event was not just about numbers; it was about making a tangible difference in the lives of breast cancer patients in her community.

Proceeds Dedicated to Comfort and Ease

All proceeds from the event were dedicated to providing a bit of comfort and ease to those on a similar battle. They were directed towards breast cancer patients in the community, providing them with products to make their journey a little more comfortable.

Drawing from her own experience, she reached out to Care+Wear, coordinating the donation of Chest Port Access Shirts and Post Surgical Recovery Bra's  to Carteret Hospital's cancer center – Carteret Health Care and Carteret Surgical Center. This thoughtful gesture ensured that breast cancer patients in her community would have access to adaptive clothing that not only met their practical needs but also conveyed a message of support and understanding.

Brittany's Message of Strength

As a mother of three and actively undergoing treatment, Brittany became a beacon of hope within the breast cancer community in her hometown. Her commitment to organizing the breast cancer walk, her personal donations, and her dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others showcase the true spirit of resilience and community support.

In Brittany's own words, "Even though life gets tough, we can push through." Her story is a shining example of turning adversity into an opportunity to make a positive impact. Brittany’s journey reminds us all that, no matter the challenges we face, we can find strength within ourselves and make a difference in the lives of those around us.
