Navigating Wellness as an EDS & POTS Chronic Illness Warrior

  • 3 min read

In the face of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and reliance on a port and mobility aid, Michelle stands as a resilient warrior. Her chronic illness journey is far from conventional, and the evolution of her wellness is profoundly shaped by the dynamic shifts in her health landscape.

Continue reading to explore Michelle's past perceptions of wellness, the pivotal moments that changed it all, and her current holistic approach to well-being.

Discovering Wellness

Wellness used to be synonymous with pushing myself physically, maintaining a clean diet, lifting weights, engaging in cardio five times a week, and pursuing my love for skiing. However, as my health issues surfaced – marked by joint pain, persistent dizziness, and weakened muscles – I found myself in uncharted territory.

Despite these challenges, denial led me to believe that doubling down on my efforts was the solution. It took the humbling experience of being unable to walk short distances without collapsing to force a reevaluation of my approach, which ultimately led to my college leave.

Seeking Help and Embracing Change

As my health was declining, I quickly realized denial was no longer an option.  Seeking a second opinion, I reluctantly embraced a new path that involved medications and a revised treatment plan. This felt like admitting defeat at first, but gradually, I started to feel better. The seemingly simple act of walking was no longer an arduous task, marking a significant improvement in my overall well-being.

While my chronic illness journey is not without its challenges, the relief of no longer being bedridden became a beacon of hope.

Wellness Redefined

Today, wellness is about listening to my body and doing what is right for it. This includes diligently following my medication regimen, engaging in prescribed physical therapy exercises, consulting the right medical professionals, and attending necessary infusions.

Alongside these crucial elements, I've come to understand the importance of maintaining a balanced diet. Nurturing my mind and soul through daily meditation, quality time with family, heartfelt conversations with friends, and the companionship of my dog have become integral components that contribute to the joy in my life. Furthermore, adaptive clothing, like The Chest Port Access Shirt, that supports me during treatment has become essential for my comfort and well-being.

Looking Ahead

As a chronic illness warrior, I envision a future where I continue to regain physical function. The goal is to return to college life and expand my horizons through travel. However, I emphasize the importance of pacing myself and proceeding at my own speed.

The commitment to doing what's best for my body, mind, and soul remains a guiding principle as I navigate the intricate journey of chronic illness with resilience and hope.

Conclusion

In the realm of chronic illness, my journey serves as an inspiring testament to the ever-evolving nature of wellness. This story highlights the resilience required to adapt to shifting health landscapes, redefine conventional notions of well-being, and embrace a holistic approach that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional facets of life. As I chart my course towards the future, I do so with a steadfast commitment to honoring my unique pace and prioritizing the well-being of my body, mind, and soul.
