What is Dialysis?
Types of Dialysis Treatments:
1. Hemodialysis: The most common type of dialysis would be Hemodialysis. This treatment circulates the blood through a dialyzer, which acts as an artificial kidney, to filter the blood. Hemodialysis is often performed at a hospital, clinic, or dialysis center, each session ranging from three to four hours. To prepare for dialysis people must undergo surgery for an AV fistula which offers a long-term solution to receive dialysis. This procedure connects an artery with a vein to provide a sturdy access point for dialysis. This type of dialysis is beneficial because it improves energy levels and appetite, and reduces fluid buildup. It can, however, lead to low blood pressure, infection, or other complications.
2. Peritoneal Dialysis: Peritoneal dialysis involves injecting a special solution into the lining of the abdomen through a catheter. The fresh solution pulls waste and excess fluids from the blood which is later drained. This process is called an exchange and is performed every few hours. Exchanges can be more convenient because they can be done at home but the correct number of exchanges must be done as prescribed. Peritoneal dialysis requires daily monitoring and does have a higher risk of infection.
3. Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT): CRRT is a type of dialysis used for critically ill patients who cannot tolerate other forms of dialysis. This option requires the patient to receive 24-hour dialysis therapy. During this procedure, blood is continuously filtered through a machine, which allows for a slower and more gentle removal of waste products. CRRT is usually performed in a hospital or intensive care unit, and it can help prevent fluid overload and other complications in critically ill patients.
Kidney dialysis is an essential medical treatment for patients with kidney failure. There are different types of dialysis treatments available, and each one has its own unique benefits and risks. By understanding the different types of dialysis and what they entail, patients can work with their doctors to choose the best treatment option for their individual needs. Whether it's hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or CRRT, there is a dialysis treatment that can help patients maintain their health and quality of life.

My choice and preference for dialysis was peritoneal dialysis! It is the way to go! In 2 years, nò infections, felt great. A night time machine automatically does the exchanges! It needs to be the preferred way to go.
